Today we created wonderfully deep blue oceans with colorful fish swimming around.
We combined two techniques to create them:
First, we mixed our own paint paste. Each child was given a plastic tray and we mixed:
1 table spoon flour
1 table spoon salt
a bit of water
dark and light blue tempera paint
Everyone mixed their paste with a craft stick and started spreading the paste onto their boards. I gave them palette knives, which are great for spreading and also learning to use them to create thick and thin amounts of paint on their images.
When they were done with the first part, I gave them colored paper, scissors and glue sticks and showed them some ideas how they could create fish images with these tools. We talked about the body, the tail, eyes and mouth and the kids started cutting, gluing and adding dot stickers.
Finally, we attached all the fish to their oceans with more glue and the final outcome is just wonderful!
This project includes so many activities: fun with mixing paint, spreading the paint with various tools and hands, fine motor skills by cutting and gluing the fish, and finally, creating a realistic image by working very abstractly. Lots of fun!
